Status of coral reefs in Seychelles
On 21st April, Dr Udo Engelhardt, a coral ecologist gave a talk on the status of coral reefs of Seychelles, with an emphasis on the stresses impacting the reefs of Seychelles. Dr Engelhardt has been studying the coral reefs in Seychelles on a regular basis since 1997, and he has been in Seychelles for the past week surveying the reefs in the Beau Vallon area.
Dr Engelhardt showed pictures and video footage of very impacted reefs. A high percentage of corals are bleaching and signs of mortality are already present. Sea water temperature has been very high in the past weeks causing the coral bleaching. The abundance of the Crown of Thorns Starfish which is a coral eating starfish in some areas is also a cause for concern.
